Afghanistan Under Taliban Rule: A Threat to Democracy, Women and International Security
The panel titled "Afghanistan Under Taliban Rule: A Threat to Democracy, Women's Rights, and International Security" provided a comprehensive analysis of the crises in Afghanistan post-Taliban takeover. The panelists discussed the dire humanitarian, security, and governance issues. They highlighted severe gender-based discrimination, the failure of international peace efforts, and the suppression of civic freedoms, urging a coordinated global response to support Afghan women, counter extremism, and promote a sustainable, rights-respecting future for the country.
How to Protect the Freedom of Taiwan?
This panel emphasised the importance of Taiwan's recognition and representation on the world stage, highlighting recent efforts to raise awareness through cinema and advocacy. Vanessa Hope, director of "Invisible Nation", shared her experience screening a film about Taiwan's geo-political predicament for the German Parliament, underscoring the valuable support received from German politicians and Taiwanese diplomats. Maysing Yang, human rights activist and democracy advocate, expressed her concern about the major autopilot focus in media coverage and emphasized that, despite the complexities of the political landscape, individuals can still make a difference. Ming Chiang, a representative from Hello Taiwan, stressed the importance of democratic principles and international unity in supporting Taiwan's sovereignty, citing Taiwan's struggle against disinformation campaigns and the need for global awareness and action to protect Taiwan's democracy.
The panel discussion focused on the theme "UN’s Responsibility to Protect and Reformation of the Security Council," offering crucial insights and recommendations. It addressed the significant challenges currently facing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The panellists, including president of the International Progress Organization Hans Köchler, former Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and the Legal Counsel of the United Nations Hans Correll, and former first minister of Scotland Alexander Elliot Anderson Salmond, debated potential reforms and the UNSC’s role in global protection.

Revolving around the impact that the authoritarian regime of Putin has imposed on Russia, including political repression, erosion of civil liberties, centralization of power, corruption and cronyism, this discussion hones in on the political and social landscape of a Russia after Putin, a scenario even more dramatic following the death of Alexei Navalny, which occurred only three days before the panel discussion. The illustrious panel included Nadya Tolokonnikova, founding member of the feminist group Pussy Riot, Lyubov Sobol, Russian opposition politician, Marina Ovsyannikova, Russian journalist, Lucy Stein, Pussy Riot activist, and David Isteev, Crisis Response Coordinator for the Russian LGBTQ Network.
